AUSTRALIAN RACING

COMMENT ON AUSTRALIAN RACING CATALOGUE'S FORM CRITICISED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, November 7. Commenting on Ajax equalling Phar Lap's Australian record with a sequence of 14 wins, “The Sydney Morning Herald" points out that Phar Lap has now disappeared from the list of Australian and New Zealand time recordholders, Manolive having established new figures for the mile and a quarter. If Catalogue had won the V.R.C. Handicap Instead of fininshlng a moderate fifth, he might have settled the vexed question of whether he won the Melbourne Cup on his merits. Those who argue in favour of Bourbon have support in the fact that Catalogue met Bourbon on Saturday on only three pounds worse terms than in the Cup. and Bourbon’s success was accomplished as easily as Catalogue’s triumph on Tuesday. The “Daily Telegraph” says: “Catalogue's failure to finish better than fifth in the V.R.C. Handicap has emphasised the falsity of the Melbourne Cup result. It is further stated that Mr A. J. MacDonald, the trainer in Australia of Catalogue, admitted after Saturday’s race that perhaps the wrong horse won the Cup.
