Derby Day at Riccarton

Defaulter Scores in f Big Event

Criterion To Gay Chou

Special to ° The Timaru Herald.” CHRISTCHURCH, November 7. The weather was cool but fine for Derby Day at Riccarton, and the track was again in almost perfect order. The attendance was up to the average for the Monday, and the totalisator investments showed an appreciable increase on last year’s figures. Defaulter justified the confidence of his admirers by winning the Derby, but he had to be ridden out to score by a length from Beaupartir, the pair drawing away from their opponents over the last two furlongs.

RACING REVIEWED

Favourite Beaten On the strength of a good third at Trentham, Waka 1447-802 was better backed than Recollection 954-94 S and The Sandwichman 402-548 for the Middleton Handicap. Waka and Rebel Leader were slow to begin, but soon made up their leeway. The Sandwichman quickly ran to the front, and at the end of a furlong he was two lengths ahead of Waka and In the Dark. Rounding the far turn The Sandwichman had increased his advantage to three lengths from Rebel Leader, Waka and Gay Vixen, who were together. Half a mile from home The Sandwichman was still three lengths ahead of Gay Vixen and Waka, with Recollection next. The Sandwichman was first into the straight from Recollection, Waka and Gay Vixen, but a furlong from home Recollection took charge and lobked like coming away. The Sandwichman, however, hung on valiantly, and A. E. Ellis got Recollection first under the wire by the shortest of heads. Waka was about three lengths away, with a longer gap to Dropped Catch. Half-head Victory The Fordell gelding Scandal (18771113) was sent out a raging favourite for the Irwell Handicap (for two-year-olds), the others with most admirers being Great Swoop 664-981, and King Gustavo 251-4493. Scandal, King Midas, Great Swoop and Mondello appeared to Jump away first, and they were all prominent with half the distance covered. Although he was inclined to steer an erratic course. Scandal was still leading Great Swoop a hundred yards from home, the pair clear of the others, but his rider appeared to drop his hands a stride from the post and Great Swoop snatched the verdict by half a head. Benevolent was two or three lengths away, just beating a line which included Prudent Prince, Mondello, Lord Midas and Blissful Lady. Strowan Plate There were twenty starters for the Strowan Plate, a set-weight race for maidens, but only Disband 1854-1153, Saki 1528-1142, Keen Sight-Happy Memory 701-903, and Papernilla 389563 elicited much support. The early leaders included Synthetic, Saki, Disband and Tantivy, and two furlongs from the post Saki and Synthetic were clear of Disband, Tantivy, The Duel and Rex Maitland. Saki was drawing away a furlong from the post, but Synthetic crept up on the Inside and got within a length again as the line was crossed. About two lengths behind Synthetic came Tantivy, The Duel, Rex Maitland and Disband with heads separating them. Comus was sent to the outside at the start, and was one of the last into the straight, but he finished well up. Microscopic Dividend The scratching of Disdain left five starters—two of them fillies—for the Derby, and Defaulter 2191-1546 was backed down to a microscopic dividend. Beaupartlr 448-997 and Russian Ballet 199-519 carried most of the remaining money. Gay Son assumed the role of pacemaker and led out of the straight from Beaupartir, Defaulter and Our Pal. Gay Son piloted Defaulter, Russian Ballet and Beaupartir into the back stretch, and this order was maintained at the mile post, the four furlongs having occupied 53 3-5. Going to the far turn Gay Son, Russian Ballet, Beaupartir and Defaulter were racing in close order, and half a mile from home the call was Gay Son, Russian Ballet, Beaupartir, Defaulter, Peerless; the watch showing 1.46 3-5 for the mile. Timing into the straight Defaulter moved into second place, just splitting Gay Son and Beaupartir. With two furlongs to go the favourite was ridden to the front and quickly established a good lead, but Beaupartir finished gamely, and with both ridden out Defaulter beat the unlucky northerner by a length. Peerless outstayed Gay Son for third money, but was five lengths behind Beaupartir. Below Standard The full field for the Criterion Handicap was not up to the usual standard in class, and backers voted solidly for the top-weights, Paper Slipper 23141319 and Gay Chou 1017-983. Paper Slipper and Peter Beckford showed momentarily in front, but they were quickly supplanted by Janet Gaynor, Gay Chou and Land Raid, who led round the top from Triune and Peter Beckford. Janet Gaynor was first into the straight from Gay Chou, Triune, Land Raid, Peter Beckford and the favourite being near the rear of the field with apparently no chance. Gay Chou and Triune fought their way to the front a furlong from the post, and Gay Chou won by a short length from Triune, who beat the fast-finish-ing Alunga by a head. Janet Gaynor was about three lengths away, just heading Land Raid.

Wild Chase Easily Although he was conceding weight to. a class horse in Wild Chase, Sly Fox was elected favourite for the Fendalton Handicap, with Dictate third selection. From a quick and accurate start, the field began well with the exception of Mungatoon. Sly Fox was first to break the line, going on from Sovereign Lady, Wild Chase and Lady Montana. At the mile Sly Fox had established a lead of three lengths from Dictate, Sovereign Lady and Wild Chase, who could not be separated, but at the far turn the favourite was only a length ahead of Mungatoon, who was the same distance in advance of Dictate, Sovereign Lady and Wild Chase (still together). At the top, Sly Fox again increased his advantage to three lengths from Sovereign Lady, Wild Chase and Mungatoon, Dictate having lost his position. Wild Chase, Sovereign Lady and Mungatoon challenged the leader as soon as the straight was reached, and Wild Chase soon asserted himself and galloped away to win by three lengths. Lady Montana finished strongly to head Sovereign Lady out of second money, with Mungatoon only a neck away. Valantua and Dictate were next, Sly Fox having collapsed in the run home. Sovereign Lady would probably have been second had she not been pinched when Wild Chase ran to the front. Lord Cavendish Finishes Well Good Passage and Lord Cavendish (who had each beaten Beaupartir at Trentham) were preferred to Toro Koura in the Randolph Handicap. Thermidor was badly chopped out at the start and Sparkle was moving backwards when the barrier rose. Toro Koura soon ran to the front from Lord Cavendish, Good Passage, Lord Nuffield and Night Hawk, and across the top the order was Toro Koura, Lord Cavendish. Good Passage, Night Hawk, Lord Nuffield, Phalanx, and Master Dingle. Toro Koura led Lord Cavendish, Night Hawk, Good Passage and Lord Nuffield to the straight, but Lord Cavendish finished best and beat the Washdyke gelding by a length. Night Hawk was two lengths away, frith a similar gap to Lord Nuffield. Then came Master Dingle, Trebor and Good Passage. The favourite appeared to have every chance, and she will now recede in favour for the Oaks. Decisive Win Five scratchings for the Epsom Handicap included Dictate and Lady Montana, with the result that The Bigot 2707-1303 was made an odds-on chance. Cricket’s showing in the New Zealand Cup caused him to be preferred to Happy Night for second choice. Second Innings and Rabble failed to jump off with the remainder of the field. Ballad and The Bigot were first off the mark, and at the six furlongs Ballad and Rabble (who had been hustled up from the rear) were clear of The Bigot and Waitaka, with Royal Star II leading the rest of the bunch. Rabble and Ballad led to the home turn from Roy L m. The Bigot and Cricket, but Ballad retired as soon as the straight was reached, and The Bigot dashed to the front to score a decisive win by three lengths from Night Wings, who came from the rear to beat Rabble by a neck. Second Innings also finished fast and headed Roy Bun for fourth position. Results:— MIDDLETON HANDICAP, Of £250; 9 furlongs 2/2—RECOLLECTION, 10.6 (A E Ellis) j 3/3—THE SANDWICHMAN, 9.7 (A.
