WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

ASHWICK FLAT Mrs H. Williams, vice-president, presided at the meeting of the Ashwick Flat Women’s Institute, in the unavoidable absance of Mrs Carter. A comprehensive report was given by Mrs W. M. Black, delegate to Waimate. Miss Evelyn Carter continued the Golden Thread. A link letter was read by Mrs Arthur Bray. Mr Strang gave a very instructive talk on daffodil (narcissi) and gladioli, and Mrs Strang sang two songs which were very much appreciated. The competitions for the day were judged by Mr and Mrs Strang, and resulted as follows: Home-made sweets, Mrs T. P. Berry and Miss Grace Allan (equal) 1, Mrs W. M. Black and Mrs D. B. Ross (equal) 2; bloom, Miss Gallagher 1, Mrs E. W. Allan and Mrs Gallagher (equal) 2. Mrs J. Ross was hostess for the afternoon. OTIPUA Miss Coughlan presided over a fair attendance of members at the November meeting of the Otipua Women’s Institute. A motion of sympathy was passed with Miss Quigley on the death of her mother, and with Mrs Shanks in her illness. Letters of thanks were received from the Makogai, Leper Station, the Soldiers’ Re-establishment League and St. John Ambulance. A letter from a Women’s Institute link in Lincolnshire, England, was read, and Mrs P. Campbell was appointed to answer it. The Group meeting to be held at St. Andrews on November 29 was discussed, and Mesdames Arden, P. and R. Campbell and Miss Coughlan were elected stewards for the flower show committee. Mrs W. E. Mills (St. Andrews) then addressed the meeting and explained the formation of the New Zealand Federation, and urged members to attend the meeting to be held at Makikihl Hall on November 17. . The two delegates to the half-yearly meeting at Waimate, Miss E. Arden and Miss M. Godwin, gave a very thorough account of that meeting, for which they were accorded a vote of thanks. A demonstration on “hair-pin” work was given by Miss Esther Arden, and on the motion of Mrs Smith she was accorded a vote of thanks for her interesting work. On behalf of the Drama Club, Miss Coughlan presented Mrs H. Caldwell with a small gift in appreciation of her willing help given at the recent festival. Hostesses for the month were Mesdames J. Allan, J. Brosnan, H. Arden, W. Black and Miss E. Arden. Competition results were:—Three tulips—Miss M. Coughlan 1, Mrs P. Campbell 2, Mrs Lunham 3. Best worked buttonhole —Mrs Godwin 1, Mrs P. Campbell 2, Miss M. Godwin 3. Vegetable bouquet—Mrs R. Jackson 1, Mrs W. Purves 2. Sausage rolls— Seniors, Mrs P. Campbell 1, Mrs R. Jackson 2, Mrs H. Arden 3; juniors, Miss M. Walter 1. Miss N. O’Donoghue 2, Miss I. Stowell Premier bloom— Seniors, Mrs R. Campbell and Mrs Lunham (equal) 1, Mrs Rooney 3, Mrs R. Jackson 4; juniors, Miss M. Walter 1, Miss I. Stowell 2, Miss M. Coughlan 3. A roll call, “Useful Hints,” proved very successful.
