An unprecedented happening was associated with the Melbourne Cup of 1897, when Mr W. Forrester collected first and second prizes with the fullbrothers Gaulus and The Grafter. The last-named was started to ensure a pace for Gaulus, who had been backed for a huge sum. A furlong from home The Grafter was still in the lead, and it required a strong rein to keep him from beating his stablemate and robbing his owner of a fortune. The Grafter won the Cup in the following year, and subsequently won the City and Suburban and other good races in England.

A dream and a tragedy were associated with Nimblefoot's Melbourne Cup in 1861. Walter Craig, a Ballarat hotelkeeper, owned Nimblefoot, who was regarded as a joke. One morning he announced at breakfast time that he dreamt that Nimblefoot had won the Cup, with the rider wearing a black armband. This was regarded as so fantastic that J. B. Slack, a prominent bookmaker, bet the owner’s wife £lOOO to a cigar that the dream would not come true. Craig died two days before the race, but his dream materialised, and Slack had no hesitation in paying the bet, Nimblefoot providing a grand turn-up for the bookmakers.
