FAIRLIE LAMBING SEASON

Average Percentages Obtained Satisfactory Weather Reports indicate that the lambing season for paddock sheep in the Fairlie district has averaged percentages equal to those for previous years. An early spring with warm dry weather kept mortality rates low, and materially assisted in what has been described as a good lambing season. Marking has not yet been completed, but it would appear that poor lambings on some farms have been more than balanced by good percentages on others. In view of a winter regarded as the worst for 30 years, therefore, the general position can be considered as very satisfactory. Even though the winter was severe, most farmers carried more than sufficient feed, and the mild spring has been responsible for a rapid recuperation in stock vitality. As far as lambing in the back country is concerned, it has not yet progressed far enough to indicate percentages, but it would seem that there also warm weather has greatly assisted in counteracting the effects of the winter. If the spring had been later the results might have been very much different, but as a general rule bad winters seem to be followed by good springs. Amongst paddock lambs, pulpy kidney is not yet taking a heavy toll, but the danger, of course, is not over. The vaccine has been used to a considerable extent, but the season is still too early for any indication of its efficacy.

Macdonald endorsed the previous speakers’ remarks. Mrs F. Carter said she wished to express thanks to Mrs Reid on behalf of the Women’s Institute for the work she had done for it. Mrs A.
