CONTROL OF LABOUR

DECISION OF SYDNEY CONFERENCE United Press Association—By Electric Tel egraph —Copyrlgh t (Received October 31, 12.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, October 30. By 524 votes to 41 a special conference of tire New South Wales Labour Party, which concluded to-day, rejected the motion which sought to give a Parliamentary caucus the right to elect its leader. That right thus remains with the State conference, while the leader, Mr J. T. Lang, will retain the right to select a Labour Cabinet when necessary. The Federal Labour leader, Mr Curtin, addressed the conference yesterday, appealing for unity, and adding, “We cannot have an autocracy or dictatorship in the Labour movement." Mr Curtin contended that the Parliamentary Party should be master of its own acts. “No man should enter a caucus room with instructions from an outside executive how to vote,” said Mr Curtin.

Mr Lang arrived after Mr Curtin’s departure and was given a tremendous ovation. He addressed the conference at length to-day, and did not refer to Mr Curtin’s speech.

Mr Lang carried the conference with him.
