RACING REVIEWED

CUP HORSES DISAPPOINT Special to “ The Timaru Herald." CHRISTCHURCH, October 29. The weather was fine for to-day’s meeting at Motukarara and the racing aroused great interest. With eight New Zealand Cup candidates in the field, the J. F. Buchanan Handicap was an outstanding event, but it proved a disappointment, as the Cup horses were all beaten out of the places. The pace was slow for a long way and it may be unwise to rub out all the horses seen to-day when considering Cup prospects. Chirp, a candidate for the Oaks, went out well from near the rails and led p the way in the Okain’s Trial Stakes. Benevolent, Queen Linda, Rex Maitland and Improvident following her along the back. Benevolent and Rex Maitland started to fade at the home turn, and Chirp beat Queen Linda decisively by half a length. Great Swoop, start-

ing from wide out, made up ground round the turn and registered a good performance to be third, after a fast finishing run. Improvident hung on to be fourth with Benevolent and La Plata next. Rex Maitland stopped badly, and was one of the last home, with Nigella and Haughty Toti alongside him. Chirp is by Full Feather, who was represented also by Plumage in her success at Rangiora. Great Swoop is a promising two-year-old. Diversion Created Rebel Leader created a diversion in the preliminary for the Highweight Handicap by bucking R. Beale off, while he tried to repeat the performance in the race, after being last away, with Flashlight and Royal Pat just in front of him. Aggravate and Aymon led out from Royal Refrain and Manetho, while Screamer, Lady Rosette and Flashlight moved up to head the others along the back. Aggravate lost his place at the five furlong post, Aymon going on from Lady Rosette, Screamer and Flashlight. Racing round the turn Lady Rosette joined Rymon, who was in trouble when the straight was reached. Screamer then challenged Lady Rosette and looked a winner when he got his head in front inside the distance. A little further on, when an effort was required to stall off a challenge. Screamer failed to respond, Lady Rosette beating him by a neck. Manetho, after losing his place along the back, came on again to be third. Flashlight and Royal Refrain were next, then Aggravate, who was rushed off his legs from the start. Lady Rosette, another Oaks candidate, is a half-sister to Vintage. This was her first success and she will improve. Trot Handicap Straight set the pare from Plymouth and Fragment in the Duvauchelle Trot Handicap, with William Potts and Sure Potts heading the others. Straight retired at the home turn. Plymouth and Fragment then went on together. Fragment appeared to be going the better a furlong from the post, but Plymouth hung on to head her by a head. True Glow stuck on well, after losing her position and easily beat William Potts fcr third. Sure Potts, Lady Vasclyne, and Homeworthy were next.

Fine Field The best field ever seen on the course took part in the J. F. Buchanan Handicap. there being eight New Zealand Cup candidates, including Malagigi and* Padishah from the North Island, but all this lot were beaten out of the money. Dictate and Waitaka began best from Happy Night, while after a furlong Mungatoon, Wine Card and Willie Win handy, Rousseau and Argentic being last. Waitaka led Willie Win and Mungatoon out of the front. Mungatoon took charge going to the back, Argentic rushing up to second with Wine Card, Waitaka, Mount Vai, Willie Win, Dictate and Last Refrain following. Padishah being last. Argentic was beaten when the straight was reached. Dictate ran to the front a little further, to be headed by Wine Card a furlong from the post, but Dictate came on again with a strong run, to beat Wine Card by a lengtn. Last Refrain hung on to get third, Mungatoon was fourth, clear of Mount Vai and Malagigi, who were in line, while Padishah finished well at the head of the others. Dictate’s performance was impressive but Wine Card added to her reputation for consistency. Malagigi never looked like a winner, but Padishah impressed with his run over the last two furlongs.

First Success Rebellion, ridden by J. W. Jennings, went off better than usual in the Halswell Hack Handicap, and soon was in front, with Financiere, Colombo. Garonne and Night Hawk handy. With about half the journey gone Night Hawk stumbled, while Financiere dropped out quickly a little further on. Flame Queen then moved up to fourth, following Rebellion, Colombo and Garonne to the straight, where Colombo retired. Flame Queen went on past Garonne, but Rebellion beat him by two lengths. Garonne was four lengths away, just in front of Miss Bluff and Scuffle, while Asset was next, a good performance after he and Real Lady had been badly left. This was Rebellion’s first success but he well go on to better deeds, as he is a good sort, when on the way. He is a three-year-old by Robespeierre, his dam Muff, being a half-sister to Silver Scorn and Disdain. Good Performance Paper Slipper, having his first race since he resumed work, was caught in the tapes at the start of the Lc Bons Handicap, while Lady Leigh and Rebel Star lost ground. Cocksure led out from Nightcalm and Silver Lark, but Rebel Star moved up fast, taking the lead after three furlongs with Cocksure, Nightcalm and Lady Leigh next. Lady Leigh then moved up and at the home turn she joined Rebel Star, who dropped out when the

straight was reached. Rabble then joined in but Lady Leigh stalled off Night Calm by half a length, Rabble being a length away, while Cocksure tired to fourth in the run home. The winner and runner-up are in the Stewards’ Handicap, in which Lady Leigh may race well. Her performance was good, after lasing ground at the start. Little River Trot Lady Slipper set the pace from the start in the Little River Trot Handicap, Dancing Pirate, Jovial, Tinker, Silk King and Gay Lady following after two furlongs. There was not much change to tlie home turn, where Lady Slipper retired. Dancing Pirate, taking charge from Jovial. They were together a furlong from the post, Jovial finishing on to win by a length. Tinker looked like being easily third, but Gay Lady finished with a rush and just missed the place. Silk King and Gentleman Joe were next. Lady Middleham Scores Happy Memory was early in the lead in the Brackenfield Hack Handicap, Screamer and Romarin following him along the back, with Great Bramble and Glenacre heading the others, while Gironde was last. Lady Middleham joined the front lot at the end of three furlongs and she ran to the lead on reaching the straight, where Maroha also made his appearance, while Gironde was stalling to move up. Lady Middleham hung on well, winning by a length. Glenacre and Maroha were fighting out a finish for second when Gironde swooped down and he beat Glenacre by a neck, Maroha being a head further back. Romarin apd Comus headed the others, Screamer faded out badly in the straight. Happy Memory also failed in the run home but his was a promising effort.
