TASMAN SERVICE
QUESTION OF GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, October 26. The Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) announced to-day that the question of Government assistance for the Bluff-Melbourne-Wellington shipping service would have to be considered shortly. Some reports on the matter had been prepared, but no finality had been reached. Mr Savage said that a good deal of money for subsidy to maintain the service would be necessary. It was no use having fifth-rate accommodation. He was not saying there was such accommodation, but was merely saying this by way of illustration. In such a service, if they had first-class accommodation between Wellington and Sydney or Auckland and Sydney, such factors brought the financial aspect to the forefront. The trans-Tasman allservice came into the question also. He considered that flying would be the chief means of transport In the future, and there was no point In legislating only for the immediate future. “The whole proposal will have to be discussed on its merits,” said Mr Savage, “and it is not such a simple thing as some people imagine. We don't want to spend a large sum of money establishing a service that will be obsolete a short time after.’’
