MODERN KNITTING CRAFT

A DRESS FOR A 6 TO 8 YEARS OLD GIRL

Materials: 9 to 11 ounces of Boucle wool in a pastel shade, and two knitting needles of a size suitable for the wool. Measurements: See the diagrams and check whether the measurements fit the model. The knitting patterns: Stocking Stitch—One row plain, and one row

purl alternately. In the finished work the rough, or purl, side of the work will be outwards. Ribbing—2 plain, 2 purl. Smocking—When the ribbing is finished sew the plain ribs together in twos every six rows (see the knitting pattern). INSTRUCTIONS The front: Cast on 136 stitches, but be careful here and each time stitches are cast on, that these agree with the model's measurements. Knit in stocking stitch for 16in and in the last row knit 1 stitch plain, 2 stitches together, and repeat to the end of the row. There should only be 90 stitches on the needles at the end of this row. The yoke which is knitted in one with the skirt is knitted in ribbing (see above).

When the yoke measures Ilin begin the armholes as follows: Cast off 4 stitches, then 3 stitches, and lastly 2 stitches at each side. Knit until the yoke measures 4in and then begin the neck as follows: Cast off the 12 centre stitches, and thereafter cast off 1 stitch in every other row on the neck, while knitting the two shoulders until there are only 24 stitches on each shoulder. Cast off in three lots on each shoulder. The back: This is knitted in the same way as the front, though when the armholes are reached the work must be divided into two lots to make the slit for the fastenings. Continue until the neck is reached, when 6 stitches are cast off on each side, and continue with the casting off until there are only 24 stitches left on each shoulder. Cast off in three lots. The sleeves: Cast on 60 stitches, and knit 4in in ribbing. Knit a further 73in of stocking stitch, meanwhile casting on 1 stitch every 6th row on both sides of the work until there are 72 stitches. When the work measures IHin cast off 3 stitches at the begin-

ning of the following 6 rows, and afterwards begin each row by casting off 2 stitches until there are only 12 stitches remaining. Cast these off in one row. To make up: First smock the ribbing of the yoke and sleeves. Press the stocking stitch under a slightly damp cloth. Sew the dress together when it is perfectly dry.

Fig. C. INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE NECK The neck is edged with 2 firm cords of twisted wool. There should be about Sin between the cords, which are made as follows: The threads must be about haff as long again as the finished cord. Cut, for example, 8 lengths of wool. Take the one end of the wool in the right, and the other end in the left

hand. With the right hand twist the threads to the right, and with the left hand twist to the left. When the wool is twisted firmly take both ends of the thread in the right hand, and with the left hand hold the twisted threads, allowing them to twist double of their own accord. Sew both ends of the twisted cord firmly, and sew on the. dress with long stitches.

At the bottom of the dress and sleeves crochet 2 rows of single crochet. At the back opening sew buttons and loops or a lightning fastener.
