Twenty-five deaths ar j feared following a tornado in Charleston, the capital of Virginia. Many negroes were trapped in the old slave market section near the waterfront. The dead total twenty-five, and 350 were injured. Twenty city squares were seriously damaged. Extensive damage was done to buildings. The roof was ripped off the City Hall, and outside communications were destroyed. The power failed. Heavy rain followed the storm, flooding the city. The tornado lasted only one minute.

Major Sir Frank Bo water was elected Lord Mayor bf London. Sir Frank, who is aged seventy-two, was an aiderman of the City of London for the Castle Baynard Ward, and was one of the King’s Lieutenants of the City of London. In 1929-30 he was Sheriff of London, and from 1934 to 1937 he was a member of the London County Council. He commanded the 4th London Howitzer Brigade in the Territorial Army in France during the Great War.
