VALUE OF RESEARCH

VISION IN DOMINION Praise for the Cawthron Institute was given by Professor Alexander Findlay, professor of chemistry of the University of Aberdeen, when he gave a lecture at the Auckland University College last week under the auspices of the Auckland Institute and Museum. Professor F. P. Worley presided. Professor Findlay said that one had to express admiration of the vision of the people of New Zealand in establishing such a research institution as the Cawthron Institute at Nelson and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. He said that results had been obtained at the Cawthron Institute in connection with fruit and stock diseases which were of the greatest importance, and under the direction of the Department very valuable work was being carried out. The lecturer said that he had learned with interest that an Institute of Medical Research had been established at Dunedin, and added that it was of the greatest importance that the people of a country should be researchminded.
