CHANGE IN SCHOOL UNIFORM

BLAZERS INSTEAD OF CARDIGANS DECISION OF BOARD A decision that blazers and felt hats, instead of cardigans and berets, should be worn as part of the uniform at the Timaru Girls’ High School, was made at a meeting of the Board of Governors last night, when it was agreed to seek the permission of the Department of Education to make the change. The matter was mentioned by the chairman, Mr H. H. Fraser, who said that together with the headmistress. Miss L. A. Hurle, and Mr A. C. Martin (secretary), they had thoroughly discussed the matter, and had come to the conclusion that the blazers would make the better uniform. This was borne out during the recent Dominion basketball tournament at Timaru when practically all the girls had worn blazers. The blazers looked more tidy and neater in every way than tr.e cardigans. In her report the headmistress. Miss L. A. Hurle, said that she had secured blazers from several Christchurch schools and had seen Mr Lawton ot the Timaru mills. He was making two bolts of cloth and was willing io cooperate in any way possible to make the blazers reasonable in price and satisfactory for wear. Miss Hurle said she would be grateful If the Board would discuss the matter as she was revising the prospectus for publication early next month. In ner opinion, blazers were warmer, tidier, smarter in appearance and more suitable for street wear. They fitted better round the shoulders and neck and lasted twice as long as knitted cardigans. If it were very cold a hand-knitted cardigan could be worn underneath tire blazer.

Mr J. W. Preen moved that the approval of the Department of Education should be obtained for the adoption of a blazer as a uniform. Mr W. Scott, who seconded the motion, recalled that when the matter was previously discussed the idea had not been favoured because of the cold weather. However, as Miss Hurle had pointed out, a cardiaan could be worn underneath the blazer. The motion was carried unanimously.
