WAIMATE CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

Annual Meeting Good Financial Position A successful year in spite of a substantial loss through the abandonment of the annual sports meeting was reviewed in the annual report of the Waimate Caledonian Society. The retiring president (Mr A. R. Cooper) presided over a good attendance of members. The annual report stated that the year commenced with a credit balance of £44/3/- and liabilities of £25/2/5 and closed with a credit balance of £7O 16/2 and liabilities of £26/13/10. The annual road race was held on Saturday, October 2. and was started this year in Waimate, finishing- in Christchurch. The amount of donations contributed to the race, including £5 given by this Society, was £24/5/- and the arrangements at this end were again successfully carried out under the supervision of Mr L. C. McLauchlan and the directors and members of our society. Excellent entries had been received for the annual sports which were to have been held on Boxing Day, but unfortunately owing to the wretch- . ed weather conditions which prevailed they had to be abandoned. The gala day was held on Eastei- Saturday and resulted in a profit of £l6. A series of 10 dances was held and returned a profit of £26/8/7. The thanks of the Society were due to the Pipe Band for the use of the hall and to the subcommittee who undertook the control of the dances, particularly Mr W. A. Dunstan and Mr J. Bain, who had charge of the supper arrangements, and Mr R. Bunz, who acted as M.C.; also to Messrs W. Wyndham, D. Stewart and R. Rattray, who assisted as executive officers. PROFESSOR ALGIE’S VISIT

ATTENTIVE HEARING “The Government appears to be very worried about the Waitaki Electorate. No doubt they think they will lose it,” stated Professor R. M. Algie, organiser of the Auckland Provincial Freedom Association, during an address in the Olympia Hall on Tuesday evening after referring to the succession of Government Ministerial speakers who have recently visited the electorate. Professor Algie was accorded a very attentive hearing by a large audience. There was no interruption of the speaker by interjectors and no questions were asked at the conclusion of the address. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr W. G. Paul presided. Also present on the platform was Captain N. A. Rattray, president of the National Party Waitaki Electorate Committee. Professor Algie said that the real Issue before the people at the coming election was not guaranteed prices or social security but whether New Zealand was to be a socialistic State or not. They must remember that the Labour Government had given the people some advantages. There were the advantages of increased wages, if they could afford them, shorter hours, if they could stand the racket and knew how to make good use of the leisure, and increased pensions, if they could provide the means. The whole question boiled down to a question of costs and ability to pay. It was childish to say that the Labour Government had done nothing. They had done something and done it well. This remark was greeted with applause from the back of the hall. “Well, I waited a long time for that,” said the speaker. “I said that because I wanted to find out where they were.” (Laughter.) “Would you like us to stand up?” called a voice. “No thanks. You'll be up presently,' Professor Algie replied. “I didn’t come down to speak to you." The remainder of Professor Algie’s address was on the lines of that given by him in Timaru earlier in the day. No questions were forthcoming, and the speaker was accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of Captain Rattray and Mr P. G. Berry.
