FINE STAND BY HASSETT AND BROWN United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copvrlßht (Received August 28, 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 27. Fine stands by Hassett and Brown were features of the cricket match between Sussex and Australia. The weather was calm and sunny. Australia won the toss and elected to bat. The teams were:— Sussex: A. J. Holmes, R. G. Stainton, John Langridge, J. H. Parks, James Langridge, H. T. Bartlett, G. Cox, H. E. Hammond, W. Cornford, D. J. Wood, J. Cornford. Australia: C. L. Badcock, C. W. Walker, A. L. Hassett, S. Barnes, S. J. McCabe, B. A. Barnett, W. A. Brown, M. G. Waite, E. S. White, F. A. Ward, E. L. McCormick. The Australians started quietly. Walker was at the crease 35 minutes. Badcock failed to get over a ball from the medium pace left-hander, Wood, and was caught in the gully. Hassett fou. l the wicket to his liking and drove and pulled a six stylishly. McCabe fell cheaply. He has often fallen lately through apparent carelessness or staleness. The morning's play was langourous. Hassett and Brown continued after lun.h, then after a stay of 115 minutes Hassett touched a ball from Hammond and It trickled on to the off stump and just dislodged the bail. Brown continued soundly and spent hall an hour getting four runs. His 50 runs were completed in two hours. He was a model of stroke production, if not of enterprise. Waite was not altogether comfortable, but he played occasional good strokes. Brown socred more briskly after tea. till an excellent ball from Wood took the top off the off stump. He batted 160 minutes and hit two fours. Stainton and John Langridge scored quickly and played out time in spite of four bowlers being tried. They were especially confident against McCormick.
