REPRESENTATIVE GAME

A WIN FOR CANTERBURY Canterbury won the annual hockey fixture against South Canterbury by five goals to four at the Park on Saturday, in a fast and 'open game played under dull conditions. Fine stickwork was seen on both sides. The teams were:— Canterbury—F. Kiddey, Denham, Shiillto, Le Page, C. Walters, J. Lester, J. Grimley, M. Lohrey, V. Guy, P. McCormick, R. Davies. South Canterbury—R. Cowles, S. Dobier, T. Cowles, A. Tissman, H. Thomas, L. Hill, C. Mayston, S. Hughes, H. Purcell, A. Boyd, W. Newman. Even play followed from the bullyoff, Purcell narrowly missing for South Canterbury. Boyd, however, made amends a few moments later, when he beat Kiddey to open South Canterbury's account. After a period of scrambling play the home forwards took play to the Canterbury circle, where Shillito saved well. From a penalty corner Purcell’s shot was stopped by Kiddey, who returned to Newman, who shot, only to be stopped by the goalie, who, however, did not clear enough, letting Mayston, who followed up, score. Canterbury now attacked, a shot by McCormick being well stopped. Guy tested Cowles well with a hai-d shot a few moments later, but again the defence held. Purcell was leading numerous rushes, and as a result the home forwards were combining much better than their opponents. Canterbury now took a turn at attack, and McCormick netted. Canterbury kept up the attack, and Lohrey’s shot was deflected by Cowles. Davies equalised on the call of halftime. Lohrey scored Just after the resumption from a rebound from Cowles. From the ensuing bully-off first Canterbury, then South Canterbury tried without success to score until Davies Increased Canterbury’s lead after a breakaway. The same player scored Immediately after play resumed, and Mayston added another one for South Canterbury. South Canterbury attacked strongly, and Mayston, with a nice shot, reduced the lead. Time was called with the scores:— Canterbury 5 South Canterbury 4 Referees:—Messrs L. Davis (Timaru) and E. Rogers (Christchurch). Women’s Games Stafford. nil, Bruce’s nil. Rata 3, Albury nil.
