NEW DREDGE
PONTOON SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED By Telegraph —Pt ess Association* DUNEDIN, August 28 The 700-ton steel pontoon of the Austral (New Zealand) Mining Company’s dredge slid side-on quietly into the water in the Molyneux river at Cromwell Gorge just after noon yesterday in a perfect launching, creating a minor tidal wave. Measuring 176 ft. long, 75ft. wide, and 13ft. 6in. deep the hull will support some 1500 tons of superstructure and machinery, most of which is already on the site ready for assembly. The dredge is expected to be ready for running about the end of next April, and with its 18 cubic feet buckets will be capable of treating 3,500,000 cubic yards per annum. The hull was constructed by two local concerns—the Dunedin Engineering and Steel Company Ltd., and A. and T. Burt, Ltd. The Austral (New Zealand) Mining Company, which possesses a nominal capital of £605,000 (paid to £211,750) holds dredging rights over 1600 acres in a wide valley just above where the gorge ends above Cromwell.
