HEALTH SCHEME
ATTITUDE OF B.M.A. Bv Telegraph—Press Association NEW PLYMOUTH. August 26. Referring to the secret vote of doctors on the Government’s social security proposals announced by Dr. J. P. S. Jamieson, president of the 8.M.A., recently. Dr. I). G. McMillan. M.P., stated at Stratford to-night that the vote was not one of opposition but of preference. Because doctors preferred the B.M.A. scheme it did not follow that they would not work the Government scheme. Dr. McMillan quoted from a pamphlet written by Dr. Jamieson a year ago, in which he said that if a universal scheme was introduced, doctors would have no option but to work it. Dr. McMillan said he had no doubt that the medical men of New Zealand would in a few years compliment the Government on its action in bringing in such a scheme. In support of this opinion he quoted English authorities showing that while violent opposition had been offered before its introduction, to-day none was more enthusiastic than the medical authorities. RAILWAYMEN’S RESOLUTION By felPuraph —Pres? Association WELLINGTON, August 27. Tha following resolution was passed at a meeting of the Hutt branch of the Railway Tradesmens’ Association: “That this branch deplores the action of the British Medical Association towards the Government’s National Health and Superannuation proposals, and that we support the Government in any action it may think fit to take.’’
