ERNEST COSSART
MOST “PERFECT” BUTLER ON THE SCREEN It took the combined efforts of two determined playwrights to lure Ernest Cossart away from the stage. Cossart is an old favourite of Ernst Lubitsch, having appeared in the Lubitsch production, “Desire.” As a result of his recent performances he is becoming known as the most perfect butler on the screen, and portrays one of these gems of perfection in Paramount’s “Angel.” He was bom in Cheltenham. England, and started his business career as a clerk in a wine merchant’s store, but gave up the business following his discovery of dishonesty on the part of his employer. On breaking away from trade he went into stock, touring Africa for five years with one company, finally making his way to New York in 1908. taking his place as one of the original members of the Theatre Guild. His part in “Angel.” is the latest step in his picture career, which started when Hecht and MacArthur saw him in “Mary of Scotland” and signed him for “The Scoundrel.” From that time on he has been constantly occupied with pictures.
