CHEESE TROPHY AWARDED
FUNCTION AT HARBOUR BOARD ORARI DAIRY COMPANY CONGRATULATED Opportunity was taken at the monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board yesterday to present the Harbour Board Cup to Messrs S. R. Muff (managing director) and L. H. Mason (a director), representing the Orari Co-operative Dairy Company Ltd., winners of this season’s cheese competi tion. The acting chairman (Mr F. R. Flatman) , who presented Mr Muff with a miniature cup, conveyed the congratulations of the Board to the directors of the Company on their success. The placings had been very close, the Go-
vernment grader having made the following awards: Orari 92.798 points, Milford 92.751, Cloverlea 92.727, Clandeboye 92.514, Geraldine 92.477, and Temuka 92.168 points. In acknowledging the congratulations, Mr Muff suggested that in future years the Board might make the presentation of the trophy in September instead of August, as the present month was a busy one at the factories which were then opened for the season. His company was very pleased to have won the trophy. He had suggested to the Farmers’ Union some four years ago that the competition should be instituted, not that he expected the Orari Dairy Company to win the trophy which had taken them four years to do. He thought that their achievement was all the more praiseworthy in view of the fact that practically 100 per cent of their produce was exported, whereas the other companies sold a considerable proportion of their cheese on the local market. Mr Muff mentioned that he had noticed that there had been an Increase of 22,000 boxes of butter and 900 crates of cheese through the Port of Timaru, and he suggested that if the Board were willing to offer a donation to the local Herd Testing Association, the quality and quantity of their dary produce would also increase. The grading had been very close and Orari had not been able to get very far away from the other companies. At the suggestion of Mr Flatman it was decided (in addition to the miniature cup which is won outright) to permit Mr Muff to retain possession of the Board’s trophy until next season, subject to a satisfactory arrangement in regard to the insurance.
