Shops to Close Before Noon Decision of Retailers Reference to a traffic bridge connecting Geraldine with Raukapuka was again made at a meeting of the Geraldine Business Men’s Association. Mr A. G. Brown, who presided, said the main trouble appeared to be that the ; borough had no funds to go on with I the project at present. The deputy-chairman of the Main I Highways Board (Mr A. J. Baker) ack- I nowledged the association’s appreciation of a sum of money being placed on this year's estimates for the sealing of Cain’s Road, Rangitata. The chairman said he had noticed red and white flags along Cain’s road . and wondered if something was being I done about it. Several members remarked that the road had been surveyed. Mr Brown: That is very good. It looks if something is being done to link us with the new 'State highway at Rangitata. Closing of Shops Discussion arose when a letter was read from the secretary of the Geraldine Racing Club (Mr W. F. Evans) asking if shops would close on half days for the Geraldine race meeting on September 22 and 24. Mr H. Russell asked why Geraldine should close if Temuka did not. Mr J. Gresham: This is the Geraldine Racing Club, not Temuka. A motion by Messrs E. J. Twigg and H. Russell that the shops close on the Saturday at 11.30 a.m. and keep open on Thursday was defeated in favour of an amendment by Messrs J. MeWhinnie and J. Gresham that the shops close at 11.30 on both Thursday and Saturday. The chairman intimated that Thursday was the recognised day for the Geraldine people. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING Appreciation was expressed by members of the Geraldine District High School Committee of the excellent work being carried out on the school grounds. The chairman, Mr A. M. Fyfe, intimated that the new school rooms would be completed in about three weeks. It was agreed that spouting be provided for the cycle shed, and a recommendation was made to the headmaster to see that pupils living close to the primary school leave their cycles at home to provide room for the pupils who cycled some distance to school. The financial statement showed that after accounts amounting to £B/17/2 had been paid, a credit balance of £l4/13/6 would remain. The Education Board advised that the superintendent of works had been | asked to supply the necessary material | for the extension to the cycle shed. ODDFELLOWS LODGE SIXTY YEARS A MEMBER Sixty years a member of the Oddfellows Lodge is the record of Mr G. H. Patrick, of Geraldine. At a meeting of Victoria Lodge No. 18 (1.0.0. F. the secretary (Mr E. P. S. Bennett) reported that Mr Patrick had been 60 years a member. During the four years he was absent from the Geraldine district, Mr Patrick was a member of the Star of Linwood Lodge in Christchurch. The oldest member of Victoria Lodge, Geraldine, is Mr Robert Hammond of Fairview, Timaru, who is a foundation member and joined the lodge 63 years ago when it started in Geraldine. Mr Patrick received a letter of congratulations from the Grand Master of the 1.0.0. F., A.O. (Bro. H. J. Clark) of Timaru. EUCHRE SOCIAL The fortnightly euchre party conducted by the Ladies’ Committee of the Geraldine Branch of the Labour Party ./as well attended. The prizes '.vere won by Miss May Lysaght, Mrs J. Barrett, Mr J. Dwyer and Mr A. Giles. Consolation prizes were won by Miss S. Buckley and Mr J. Burke. PERSONAL Mr andJVlrs F. J. Wallace, New Plymouth, are the guests of Mr and Mrs A. J. Bell, Talbot Street. Mr W. Patrick is visiting his sister, Mrs J. Webb, Dunedin. Mr and Mrs P. G. Spencer, who have been visiting Geraldine have returned to Oamaru. “THE MAGNIFICENT BRUTE” Victor McLaglan, winner of the last Academy award for the outstanding screen performance, is being screened a' the Geraldine Municipal Theatre to-night at 8 a.m. This Universal picture is filmed in a setting never before attempted in the movies. Part of the story takes place in a steel mill, with Victor McLaglen turning out glowing metal in the daytime and pursuing glittering blondes at other times. Binnie Barnes and Jean Dixon are the blonde ladies in the offering. The cast includes William Hall as the menace, Henry Armetta, Billy Burrud, Ann Preston, and Edward Norris. “The Magnificent Brute,” is taken from a Libert/ magazine story called, "Big,” by Owen Francis. Variety supports will be screened. A National Party dance will be held in the Arundel Hall on Thursday next at 8 p.m. The Geraldine district band are giving a concert in the Town Hall on Sunday, September 4, at 8.15 p.m. The annual ball of the Victoria Lodge will be held on Wednesday, September 7. Bridge Basketball Club will be held on Saturday, September 17, at 8 p.m. A huge sale of work for the St. Mary’s Anglican Guild will be held on Wednesday, November 16.
