DOMINION TOURNAMENT OPENS NEXT WEEK Timaru will be astir next week when it is invaded by 400 basketbailers for the Dominion tournament, which will be officially opened on Wednesday afternoon by the Mayor, on the Caroline Bay courts. Twenty-three teams from all over the Dominion will be taking part and some very exciting and clever basketball is bound to be witnessed. The nine teams in the first grade will compete for the New Zealand Cup, the runner-up receiving the Annie Brown cup. There are nine teams in the second grade and eight in the third grade. The winner of the second grade holds the President’s Shield and the runner-up the Hayhurst Cup Tne winner of the third grade holds the Kiwi trophy and the runner-up the Armstrong Shield. All the games will be played on the Caroline Bay courts The final game, to be played on the Saturday, will be North v. South Island. On Wednesday and Thursday exhibition games will be played by the New Zealand team which has just returned from a tour of Australia.
