Mr Dewey’s campaign to smash local rackets and prosecute prominent persons, resulted in the suicide of State Senator Julius Berg, in his law office. He told his wife: “I am too much involved to face the investigation.” Following the death of Senator Berg, it transpired that the Grand Jury had secretly indicted Berg on seventeen counts of embezzlement, grand larcency and false representation.
