QUEER FEATURE OF THE BUDGET.
One of the queerest features of the Financial Statement now before the House of Representatives, is the official attitude to the statistics relating to unemployment, and the comprehensive plans the Minister of Finance is making to provide funds—something like six millions—to solve a problem the .Minister of Labour declares does not exist. .Moreover, while it is admitted that last year the Government expended £4,239,450 out of the Employment Promotion Fund, it is proposed if the Government secures authority to implement its social security plans, to forget all about the unemployment and apply all the millions now provided for the promotion of employment to the fund for superannuation and health service. What I lien is to become of the unemployed?
