The Pope, in a speech, denounced exaggerated nationalism which he declared was contrary to divine law, and had now reached actual apostasy. Well informed persons interpret the speech as a condemnation of the Italian action against the Jews, which was recently forecast. The Rome correspondent of “The Daily Telegraph” states that under the guidance of the Minister for Popular Culture, a group of University Professors has reported that the racial composition of the Italians is purely Aryan, with no African admixture. “Jews do not belong to the Italian race,” said the report. This has disquieted Jews who have recently failed to secure promotion in the army and navy and are being advised to retire.
