SENSATIONAL FIGHT
Referee Quits the Ring Without Deciding Tom Jaro—Jack Burns There was a sensational ending to a sensational fight at Brisbane Stadium on a recent Saturday night. In the seventh round referee Pat Hill left Tommy Jaro recumbent on the floor near his own corner, and without putting the count on him climbed out of the ring. That is Pat’s way of declaring a “No Contest” and leaving it to the management to say whether or not either contestant will receive any reward for his efforts. Jaro’s opponent was Jack Burns and the weight of each was returned at 10.5. Tommy has earned the reputation of being a destructive fighter and a vicious puncher. Though Burns did a good deal of jazzing about in the first round, Tommy kept moving after him steadily. So solid were his deliveries that in the second round he had Burns on his knees for “six.” Jack was no sooner up than a right chop to the chin stretched him out for “seven.” Standing off what appeared to be a practically beaten opponent Jaro shot a couple of lefts to the face and then drove a right for the body which appeared to catch Eurns on the elbow. Jaro shook his right glove as if in pain. He stated later that he had jarred a knuckle so severely that he was unable to use his right again effectively. Spared his Right From the beginning of the third round Jaro used his right sparingly, contenting himself with left jabs and hooks. These were sufficient to leave very obvious traces on Burns’ features, but Jack seemed to have a new lease of life, and. though few gave him a winning chance, he was certainly making a fight of it. It was not until the fifth that he surprised everyone by sending Jaro to his knees and later staggering the coloured fighter again with a couple of rights to the jaw. There was a chorus of hoots from the galleries which changed to applause when, at the close of the round, the referee went to each corner and addressed to the men a few forcible remarks. Down for Nine Jaro failed to do any better in the sixth, leaving it to Burns to do all the attacking and contenting himself by fending off the charges with a straight left. Early in the seventh round Jaro went to his knees for “nine.” Up again he appeared to stagger along the ropes with Burns scoring to the body. Jaro fell into a clinch and Burns pushed him off to send a right to the head from which Jaro stretched on the floor. The I referee stood over him for a moment then shaking his head, he left the ring. There was a scene of excitenient for a few minutes, some of the spectators upholding the action of the referee, others expressing the view that he had been too severe. The stadium manager, Mr Jack Hoult, said later that the position would be fully investigated before any payment was made to the principals.
