1940 OLYMPIC GAMES

Japan’s Bid Every possible effort is being exerted for the ultimate success of the Twelfth Olympic Games, to be held at Tokio in 1940. The city of Tokio has recently taken a more positive attitude and has sent representatives to Yokohama, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nagoya, and Horishima to negotiate with and secure the assistance of these six principle cities (states a bulletin from the Japanese Olympic Committee). The delegates from the Tokio Municipal Office included Mr E. Isomura, general secretary of Tokio City, Mr S. Kuwahara, member of the 0.0. C., and Assembly members Abe and Kato, who left Tokio on February 19 to visit these various cities where they gave detailed information conoerning the progress and preparations for the coming Olympic Games and enlisted further support of the Games from these cities. The municipal offices of each of the cities have sent words of encouragement and reassurance of their support to professor Kano, 1.0. C., member and representative of the 0.0. C., and Mr Nakatsuka, of the Tokio Municipal Office, who are attending the Cairo session. Site Approved The 1938 ski, skating, and bob-sleigh national championship meets, which were held in Sapporo on the site of the Fifth, Olympic Winter Games proved that the site will be very satisfactory. It is felt therefore, that with the present facilities the Fifth Olympic Winter Games can be carried out without any great difficulty. Furthermore, the plans for the coming year include sponsoring the ski, skating, and bob-sleigh contests from February 3 to February 14, a period of 12 days which correspond to the schedule set for the Fifth Olympic Winter Games in Sapporo in 1940. The Ski Association and the Skating Union of Japan selected their Olympic candidates immediately after the national championship meets as follows: Ski (67 members). —Distance and endurance, 18 members; jumping, 15; combined (distance and jump), 11; combined (downhill and slalom), 13; women, 10. Skating (GO members).—Speed, 22; ice hockey, 31; figure (men), 4; and figure (women), 3.
