THE OPEN ROAD

Harrier Activities (By "Marathon") Season’s Fixtures Saturday, July 30—Orr-Walker Cup Race; South Canterbury Junior and Senior cross-country championships: Caroline Bay. Saturday, August 27—Canterbury crosscountry championships, Christchurch.

September 10—New Zealand crosscountry championships: New Plymouth. September 10—Temuka-Timaru road race. Last Saturday’s race for the Norrie Cup and the Powell Shield proved to be one of the best of the series of these races. Once again Lloyd Williams showed a clean pair of heels to the rest of the field and has enhanced his chances of winning the South Canterbury championship at the end of the month. He was closely followed by his club mate throughout the whole Journey, I but Williams had too much pace for Gillon on the run home. Taylor, Squire, and Shivas were with the leaders for about three-quarters of the Journey but were not able to foot it with the West-Enders. Rackley and McPherson who finished in sixth and seventh places respectively, both ran excellent races, and realised the value of good team work, and their fine effort was mainly responsible for the success of the West End Team in the Powell Shield contest. Strachan (Presbyterian), who finished eighth place, has considerably Improved since the handicap race at Temuka. Wilson and Ward (Timaru) pectations and will have to take their were evidently not running up to extask more seriously at the end of July. Bert Williams, Markham, and Winnington all ran well, and are steadily improving their positions. C. Langrish and J. Donaldson (West End) should have improved their positions but were evidently content to keep in the rnidle of the field. The contest for the Powell Shield was mainly between the holders, Timaru and West End. Before the race was half way through it looked as though West End would not be beaten and the splendid backing up that Williams and Gillon received from Rackley and McPherson was responsible for their very fine victory. The usual excellent team work of the Timaru runners was not in evidence on Saturday and to successfully contend with the strong West End Team in the Orr-Walker Cup their team work will have to show a considerable improvement. Following are the detailed results of the Norrie Cup and Powell Shield. Competitor Club Place Time

Junior Race The junior race for the Maxwell I ■ Memorial Cup and the Te Huru-Huru Shield also provided an exciting race and brought to light some very promising talent and the major places were filled by first seasons runners. F. J. O'Gorman (Timaru B) ran an excellent race to win the Maxwell j

Memorial Cup. He kept in touch with the leaders throughout most of the journey and took the lead coming out of Park Lane and remained in charge to the tape though he was challenged by his club mate C. Johns who was content to fill second place. S. McWhirter (Timaru B) filled 3rd place, beating J. Knowles (Ang) to the tape in a sprint hdme. Drake (Timaru A) was only nine seconds behind Knowles and was closely followed by Allchurch, Breen and Walker. Results of Maxwell Memorial Cup Competitor Club Place Time

Savidan and Kohei Murakosa have figured in the news in recent days, says an exchange. | Billy, making a come-back to track ! running, filled third place, inches behind the winner, from the scratch i mark in a 4000 yards steeplechase event I at Auckland and Murakosa has been | called up for service in the Japanese army. Savidan also won the Onehunga to Auckland road race recently. Savidan, who held sixteen New Zealand championships —ten on the track and six at cross-country—won his first

national title in 1927 and, with the exception of the Empire Games champion, Cecil Matthews, is still the best distance runner in New Zealand. He represented New Zealand at the Empire Games in Canada in 1930, winning the six-mile title, and at the Oympic Games in 1932 he filled fourth place in both the 5000 and ’O,OOO metre championships. His last New Zealand championship race was against Murakosa, Savidan filling second place. Murakosa, in winning the three-mile

title at Auckland, set new figures, later broken by Matthews. Murakosa was a star at the Olympic Games in Berlin and was considered to bo Japan’s No. 1 man for the Games in Tokio. At Berlin, although he could not do better than fill fourth place in the 5000 and 10,000 metres, he was one of the most popular competitors. The official report of the American Olympic Committee stated:

“Little Kohei Murakosa, of Japan made a valiant bid to defeat the three Finns in the 5000 metres, but had to be content with fourth place although he broke the previous record. Murakosa ! led the field of 311 starters in the 10,000 metres for 25 laps; the lead/was taken from him in the last lap. Despite some hearty jostling he made a magnificent showing.” Murakosa is to join the Japanese army; Billy Savidan may yet win another New Zealand title. Billy simply won’t grow old!
