CLAREMONT SCHOOL
DIAMOND JUBILEE To-day is the sixtieth anniversary cf the opening of the Claremont Befool. In 1877 a large number of settlers assembled io discuss the provision of a school to serve the needs of the district, and as a result of the meeting the Education Board was approached and it agreed to a grant of £750 for a building. The school was opened on July 16, 1878, Mr Albert Bellman, of Timaru, being appointed headma: tei. There was an attendance of 22 on opening day, and of these pupils Mrs Waddington and Messrs J. Fowler. H. Fowler and G. D. Selbie are still resident in the district. First day pupils still alive, but who are residing outside the district, are Messrs A. Pelvln, R. W. Selbie, J. Gibson, Mesdames Simpson, Harrison, Clarck, Tlatman and Misses K. Armstrong and G. Armstrong. Later the school grounds were laid cut, and a master’s residence erected. In 1894 Mrs Black was appointed mistress and she remained in charge until 1920. The members of the present committee are Messrs P. R. Talbot (chairman), H. Ironside, A. Seyb, J. Casey, and L. Clark.
