TRIBUTES PAID

LATE HON. IL A. RUSSELL By relegrapn —Fi e.-.s Association WELLINGTON, July 15. In the House of Representatives this afternoon, the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, moving that a resolution of sympathy be extended to the relatives of the late Hon. H. A. Russell, M.L.C., outlined the late Mr Russell’s career, and said he had a record of public service of which anyone might well be proud. He had taken no unimportant part in the shaping of New Zealand's destiny and ills lather, too, the late Sir William Russell, had played a great part in laying the foundation of the Dominion's public affairs. In all his activities Mr Russell had never allowed politics to intrude in his friendships and everyday life, and he had earned the esteem and high regard of all shades of political opinion. The sympathy of the House went out to his relatives. The Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Adam Hamilton, seconding the motion, said he desired to associate himself with the sentiments expressed by Mr Savage. Mr Russell’s achievements were such as anyone might be proud of, and he had played his part in a quiet, unostentatious manner which had earned him the esteem and respect of his fellows. Mr Russell had been actively associated with A. and P. Associations and Mr Hamilton said he considered that no group or organisation had done more to promote New Zealand’s wealth than those societies which were responsible tc such a large extent for the improvement of the quality of New Zealand’s stock. Tributes were also paid to the late Mr Russell by Mr E. L. Cullen, Mr W. P. Endean, the Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, Mr H. S. S. Kyle, the Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Mines, and Mr Speaker (Hon. W. E. Barnard). The House adjourned at 2,55 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday, as a mark of respect to the late Mr Russell.
