From 26 applications, one of which was from Sydney, Mr R. F. Mainland, engineer of the Lower Hutt Borough, has been appointed engineer to the New Plymouth Borough Council, in succession to the late Mr C. Clarke. To become general secretary of the New Zealand Baptist Union and Missionary Society, the Rev. Lawrence A. North will shortly resign the pastorate of the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church, Christchurch, which he has held for the last seven and a-half years. He expects to take up his new duties in October. Yesterday afternoon the staffs of the Government Employment Bureau and the State Placement Service met to say farewell to Mr C. Lawrence, the Bureau’s inquiry officer, and to wish him success as District Inquiry Officer of Otago and Southland. Mr E. C. J. Foot, in making the presentation of a pair of leather motoring gloves, spoke highly of Mr Lawrence's services in Timaru and of the honour reflected on the Timaru Bureau by reason of his new appointment. Mr Sampson, in congratulating Mr Lawrence, said that the placement service had benefited much from the assistance rendered by Mr Lawrence in securing employment for unemployed men. Mr Bowden added the well wishes of his fellow workers, and expressed the regret of the staff in losing such a congenial confrere. In reply, Mr Lawrence said .that his term of office in Timaru was one of the happiest periods of his life. Reference to the passing of two prominent South Canterbury sheep breeders was made at a meeting of the Timaru A. and P. Association yesterday. The chairman (Mr C. H. S. Johnston) said that recently the death had occurred of Mr Robert Allan, wellknown in the Mackenzie Country, who was an uncle of a member of the committee, Mr Donald Grant. Mr Allan was a keen breeder of sheep and his knowledge had been much sought after, said Mr 1 Johnston. Mr W. J. Bassett referred to the recent I death in Christchurch of Mr Arthur S. Bruce, who had been a member of the Association from 1898 to ! 1902, when he left South Canterbury. Mr A. S. Elworthy was the only remaining member of that ’ early committee, and he (Mr Bassett) had been 1 appointed to fill the vacancy caused by Mr Bruce’s i departure. Motions of sympathy were carried in silence.
