WAIMATE HINT
CARD FOR TO-DAY The Waimate Hunt’s annual race meeting will be held at the racecourse to-day, starting at noon. The track i will be soft, but the going will not be I bad. Betting will be conducted on the single pool system. The first race on the card is the Amateur Cup Steeplechase, the field in which will include two Southlanders, Last Post and Converse. Three of the others will be steered by Westcnra brothers. McHeath, Grampian and Chaste, all winners this season, will be opposed by three beginners in the Studholme Hurdles and probably most attention will be paid to those with experience. The Novice Stakes field includes a brace of two-year-olds, and one of these, Toro Koura, is certain to be in strong demand. Sunny Dawn has the best recent form of the older horses, though Hostile showed speed two or three seasons ago. There is a stronger collection than usual in the Hunt Cup, including the last two winners in Bonny Buff and Uncle Jim. Southland is represented by Quinopal. Converse and Gold Wren, who will all elicit support. Valantua, top-weight in the Waihao Handicap, won convincingly at his last start, but the distance may be rather short for him. Two others expected to race well are Donadea and Half and Half. I Royal Gallant has . hown a return to form lately, and in the Morven Handicap lie may be preferred to Petersham and Moneyless. | The acceptance for th: Winter Trot I is below the average, and the small I field should improve the prospects of the backmarkers, Battlevale and Myrna Loy, though Coleridge may be the elect of backers. Several of the acceptors for the Waimate Hack Handicap are engaged in an earlier race, but most of them are expected to run again. The distance will suit Valantua and Thermidor. Horses which seem to be most discussed are:— Amateur Cup Steeplechase— Last Post. Harkaway. Studholme Hurdles—Chaste. Grampian. Novice Stakes —Toro Koura, Sunny Dawn. Hunt Cup Steeplechase—Uncle Jim, Quinopal. Waihao Hack Handicap—Donadea, Half and Half. Morven Handicap—Royal Gallant, Petersham. Winter Trot—Coleridge, Battlevale. Waimate Hack Handicap—Valantua, Thermidor. Following is the card:—
