YOUNG FARMERS
PLEASANT POINT CLUB Mr D. Gardiner presided over a good attendance of members at a meeting of the Pleasant Point Young Farmers’ Club on Wednesday. A talk on his recent trip to Australia was given by Mr F. Clarke. The speaker gave an interesting account of his trip overland from Sydney to Melbourne, and described the various types cf country through which he passed. He said that parts of the country in lf:W South Wales bore ample evidence of the drought conditions prevalent there. Some interesting comparisons were made between farming conditions in New Zealand and Australia. In Australia the rainfall was uncertain, but much was being done to rectify this by means of irrigation. Mr Clarke described visits to several experimental farms in both New South Wales and Victoria, One feature that impressed him was the fact that in grass trials in Australia, Hawke’s Bay ryegrass was considered to be superior to all other strains. While in Melbourne he visited several large factories where he saw mass production methods in operation. The speaker was asked numerous questions at the conclusion of his address and was accorded a vote of thanks. HUNTER CLUB On Wednesday evening the Hunter Young Farmers’ Club held a debate which proved very interesting. Mr A. M. Paterson was the judge and also gave members some helpful advice on the art of public speaking. The winning team comprised Messrs D. Gregan Header), J. Geaney and F. Scott.
