IVANHOE

CHAPTER 3

The Lady Rowena

With old-fashioned, respectful ceremony Cedric conducted Rowena to the elevated seat at his own right hand appropriated to the lady of the mansion. All stood up to receive her. With a graceful salutation she replied to their courtesy and assumed her place at the table. Before she had time to do so, the lemplar whispered to Prior Aynier: “You are right! I have never saw a more beautiful woman.” “Be careful,” murmured the Prior. “Cedric observes you.” But accustomed only to act upon the impulses of his own wishes, Bois-Guilberl kept his eyes riveted on the Saxon beauty, unheeding his friend’s warning. It cannot be wondered at that Rowena impressed Bois-Guilbert so strongly. She was tall in stature, formed in the best proportions of her sex, with a noble east of her head and an exquisitely lair complexion. Her clear blue eye seemed capable of command as well as to beseech. If mildness was the most natural expression of her features, it was plain that she had a firm will and used to command. She was not for nothing of royal Saxon blood. When Rowena perceived the Knight Templar’s eyes bent on her with such an ardour, she drew her veil of silk around her face.
