TEMUKA UNIFIED RIVER CONTROL

PRELIMINARY STEPS TAKEN BILL PREPARED Preliminary steps have been taken to have the Temuka and Geraldine Boroughs included in the area under the jurisdiction of the Geraldine River Board as part of the scheme for unified control. The Bill to amend the Geraldine County River District Act 1921-22 has been drafted, and after the period of public inspection has elapsed it will be introduced in the House of Representatives by the member for the district, Mr T. D. Burnett. It is hoped that it will pass through all its stages during the present session of Parliament. When the Minister of Public Works visited Temuka recently the damage from river erosion to valuable farm lands was pointed out to him, and in the course of the discussions the subject of a comprehensive survey of the rivers in the district was introduced. It was revealed that the Act defining the area under the control of the Geraldine County River District Board specifically excluded the Boroughs of Temuka and Geraldine. The effect of this was that the Board could not undertake protective works in or for the boroughs as the Audit Department had objected to the levying of rates in the boroughs for this purpose. The amending Bill will provide for the inclusion of the Boroughs of Geraldine and Temuka in the Board’s territory. It also provides for the reconstitution of the personnel of the Board, which will consist of members of the Geraldine County Council, two members from each of the boroughs of Geraldine and Temuka, and members of the Levels County Council who may be appointed to represent any sub-division in that county. The Bill will also validate the expenditure previously incurred by the Board in carrying out protective works in the boroughs. Mr K. Mackenzie, chairman of the River Board, told a “Timaru Herald" reporter at Temuka yesterday that this legislation Was prepared two years ago but was not proceeded with. Negotiations are under way for a survey of the whole of the river district, and when this is authorised the boroughs of Temuka and Geraldine will be included. ‘‘ln view of the survey and the desirability of having all the rivers under one controlling authority, this procedure of introducing the amendment Bill has been adopted,” said Mr Mackenzie, FRIENDLY FRIDAYS CLOSE FINISHES Close finishes were the feature of the eleventh round of the winter card tournament of the Friendly Fridays Club which was played on Thursday night The results were 56 to 55 in both matches, Druids defeating Oddfellows and Citizens defeating the Hibernians.
