ECONOMY IDEA

BED SPREAD CURTAINS “We sell as many of these spreads for curtains as for beds,” said the assistant, as he displayed one of the candle-wick cotton bedspreads that are obtainable in various cosy colourings. “When the spread is cut down the centre, the customer has a pair of curtains, each bordered at top. base and one side, and only needing to be hemmed along the other side. The weight causes the curtains to hang well, and the depth is usually just about right for the rather shallow windows of modem flats and small houses.” Work this out for yourself and you will see what an econou.j in cost, and what a saving of planning and stitching, the idea represents. It does not apply, of course, merely to spreads of the kind mentioned, but equally to those in printed tissues, artificial silks and the heavy laces and nets that are now fashionable. Where the depth of the window does not necessitate the whole width of the spread being used, the top border can be cut off and as a pelmet or frilling. Similarly, large chenille tahle-covers can be halved and used as bordered curtains at small windows, where it is desirable to have hangings that are fairly heavy. Covers of woven tapestry are bought for the same purpose. Women without too much time at their disposal appreciate the joy of avoiding all the tiresome business of lining curtains and of sewing on yards of trimming to the edges. The new plan makes drapery matters easy as well as effective.
