WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

CAVE At the July meeting of the Cave Women’s Institute, Miss Amyes presided. Letters of sympathy were sent to two families who had suffered bereavement. Three new members were proposed. Invitations from Tycho and Sherwood Downs to attend their birthday parties were receive. Mrs McLeod wrote thanking members for their donation to Strathcona Hostel. Members were reminded to send in their favourite recipes for inclusion In the new cookery book. A plan was agreed to for beautifying the memorial in the school grounds. Several members promised to give trees and shrubs, and an effort will be made by members to plant trees on Arbor Day. A suitable site is to be chosen to plant trees with the grant that was received from the Mackenzie County Council some time ago. A debate on “Should women work on the farm,” was held. The affirmative was taken by Mrs Weavers, Mrs Rich and Mrs Hart, and the negative by Mrs W. Little, Miss Mai Scott and Mrs Cameron. By popular vote those taking the negative were declared the winners. Mrs G. G. Rich, who has just returned from a trip to the South Seas, gave a short talk on her tour. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames M. E. Eagle, W. Moses. G. Squire, and Misses D. Wisely and M. Barry. A hostess competition was won by Miss R. Wisely and Mrs W. Little. The competitions, judged by Mrs James Scott and Miss Scott, resulted:— Pair bed-socks: Mrs McMaster, senr.. 1. Miss R. Wisely 2. Bottle preserved pears: Miss Amyes 1. Miss Fairbanks 2. Miss Amyes 3. Three root vegetables: Miss Mamie Scott 1, Miss Fairbanks 2, Miss Amyes 3. Premier bloom: Mrs W. Little. EALING There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Ealing Women's Institute, Mrs E. Davis presided. Miss Robins, A.C.E. tutor, gave a lecture on kitchen arrangements and Mrs Breeze kindly demonstrated bead evening bags. Both speakers were accorded a vote of thanks. Tire competitions resulted as follows. —Bloom: Mrs Giddings. Truss, Miss P. Good. Shrub, Miss I. Jones. Bowl of flowers, Mrs Donaldson. Thrift article: Mrs Simpson 1, Mrs Fenwick 2, Mrs Good 3. One egg cake: Mrs Fenwick 1, Mrs Simpson 2, Mrs South 3. Marmalade jam: Mrs H. Jones 1, Mrs Fenwick 2. Mrs South 3.
