AMERICAN POLITICS

THE PRESIDENCY i The United States is divided into two | over the possibility of Mr Franklin i Roosevelt standing for President a third time, said Dr. J. Morriston Thomas, of Chicago, who arrived in i Timaru yesterday to take temporary I charge of Chalmers Presbyterian I Church. ' The traditional procedure provided j for a maximum of two terms, and only extraordinary conditions would warI rant the seeking of a third term by ’ the same man. I "Such extraordinary conditions are , not with us right now,” said Dr. ■ Thomas, “but, nevertheless, many people believe that conditions are in Mr Roosevelt’s favour, should he seek another term in office. A prominent j journalist said recently, in the ‘ReadI ers’ Digest,’ however, that though a : Democrat could be elected for a third I term, the traditional attitude of the : people militated against Roosevelt or i anyone else.” : Mr Roosevelt had indicated no intent ion of standing again, as yet, added Dr. Thomas, and the whole matter was still in the realm of speculation. I Mr Roosevelt was popular in the I United States, much in the same way las Mr Savage was popular among j Labourites in New Zealand. The President was opposed, of course, by ■ the Republicans. I No one side had the truth, and it j would always be a case of two oppos- ' ing forces, with the Republicans and the Democrats alternating in power.
