FALSE PRETENCES
DOMESTIC’S NAME SUPPRESSED A 21-year-old domestic, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, appeared I in the Timaru Magistrate’s Court yesi terday when she was charged that at ! Timaru on June 24, with intent to defraud, she did obtain articles valued at £4/19/-, the property of R. P. Carter, by means of a false pretence. Accused, who was not represented by counsel, pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with by the Court. Detective-Sergeant E. M. Thomas said accused went to Carter's, where she obtained a bedspread and an eiderdown, giving a false name and address. She said she wanted them for a present for a friend who was being married. The bedspread had been recovered but the eiderdown had been given away. It was valued at £1 19/6. Accused was a domestic and was working in a good home in South Canterbury. Her employer was aware of the present case, but was prepared to keep her In employment. She was not represented by counsel but had asked him (the detective) to mention the question of the suppression of her name. “You have previously had a good character and now you have jeopardised that character,” said Mr H. Morgan, S.M. He proposed to give accused a chance, but she must understand that any further trouble would not be treated leniently. He ordered her to come up for sentence within six months if called upon and to make restitution of £l/19 6. The order for the suppression of the name was granted.
