Debt on Church Being Reduced Methodist Quarterly Meeting Satisfaction with the financial position of the Methodist Church in Temuka was expressed by officers of the church at th? quarterly meeting on Wednesday night. The Rev. H. G. Brown presided. The statement of finances presented by Mr B. C. Holwell revealed that £55 had been received during the quarter for the reduction of debt. The debt now amounts to £54. compared with £llO at the same time last year. It was decided to make every endeavour to wipe the balance out in the near future. Preliminary arrangements wore made for the holding of the annual flower show in September. Mr E. Blackmore was appointed to organise the display. Mr G. Simpson was elected circuit steward to fill the vacancy caused by the removal of Mr G. H. Cone to Tima ru. The date of the annual foreign mission meeting was fixed for late August, when a lecture with lantern slides illustrative of life in Papua and the Solomon Islands will be delivered by the Rev. C. H. Scrivin. general secretary for the foreign missions department. Acting on a proposal advanced by Mrs Erown, it was decided to organise a Temnka branch of the Methodist Women’s Missionary Union. A letter was received from the Rune and Foreign Missions Department arlvising that the centenary of Methodism in the Souih Island would be celebrated in 1940. A century ago Rev. .James Wat kin landed in Otago and had the distinction of being the first minister of any church to commence work in the South Island. It was proposed to erect a memorial church in brick at Otakou. the site of the original mission. It was decided to hold special collections in the Temuka church for the project. Mr Brown reported that he and Mr A. Dale had commenced boys’ brigade work with a team of bo.ys who met on Friday evenings. The team was open to Sunday School boys between 9 and 12 years and it is hoped to establish a brigade company for older boys in the near future.

The communication further stated that local associations were therefore requested to refrain from expressing in any communication winch might be forwarded to Australia, any reference regarding arrangements in connection with the visit.
