AWARD BROKEN

PENALTIES TOTAL £5 Three breaches of the Private Hotel Employees Award w’ere admitted by Irene Batty in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday when £lO penalties in each instance were sought by the Inspector of Awards (Mr R. J. Weir). Mr Weir said defendant, who had a boardinghouse accommodating five or more boarders, was a party to the award. The breaches were in respect of two employees who had not been given a full day off in each week, had not been given a half holiday from 1 p.m. each week and who had not been paid at overtime rates. The workers had worked part of each day of the week and, although they had been given half days it was not until about 1.30 or 2 p.m. The award provided for a 44 hour week, but the two employees concerned had worked from 55 to 60 hours a week. Mrs Batty had agreed to pay to the girls what was owing in arrears and had actually begun to make the payments, the total amount involved being £l7/15/2. I Defendant said she had not been aware of the provisions of the award, which she had seen only recently. She had given the girls time off each day, but not 24 hours consecutively. The Magistrate (Mr H. Morgan, S.M.) entered judgment for the inspector for £2 on each of the breaches of the holiday clauses and £1 on the breach of the overtime clause.
