THE CAMPAIGN ISSUE
To the Editor >t ” The Timaru Herald Sir,—l wish to protest against Mr O. Mazengarb classing all the people at the back of the hall at his meeting as of the same “kidney." I was there and I am not a Socialist or a Communist, but one who by hard work and thrift tried to provide for my family and my old age, and now’ find myself treated with less respect than those who were only spenders. I am to be the milch cow for them. This Government does not care a hang for the people who have w’orked hard for long, long years to build this country up from the tussock to what it is now—the finest in the world. It is only out to spend the thrifty workers’ moneyon those who abused and spent their own, and now are going to get rewarded by taking from the thrifty folk to give them more. I was tackled by some of those on the back benches: Why I, an Orangeman, would vote for Mr Hall? “Yes,” I said. “I have known the Halls, father and son. over many years. I have worked under them, and always found them straight, fair and above board. ‘Bill’ Hall made a success of his own business, and I think he will be better able to look after mine and the country’s than one who has failed at his.” In my lodge. I took an oath to defend “my King, my country, my flag, and my God.” Therefore it would be impossible to help on the Red Flag of Socialism. In conclusion, I’m for the Red. White and Blue, the good old Union Jack that has been our sheet anchor up till now’, not for the Red Flag of Socialism and Communism.—l am, etc., WM. CARTWRIGHT. Timaru, July 11.
