BOXING

ALLAN - HANHAM CONTEST Final Arrangements Made A meeting of the general committee of the South Canterbury Boxing Association was held last evening. Present — Messrs T. R. Rhodes (chairman), W. H. Orbell, W. W. Best, G. T. Wardell, C. C. Campbell, C. H. Barrie, T. Sega;-, J. J. Stewart, C. H. Triggs, J. A. Shea, J. Dineen, L. H. Dobson, R. McGlashan and M. J. Angland Thon, secretary). The chairman reported that following the direction received from last meeting, the match and finance committees had completed negotiations for George Allan (middle-weight champion) and Cliff Hanham to meet in a 10 round bout on Thursday. The terms Offered by the association had been agreed to by both contestants. Mr Rhodes said that special arrangements would have to be made for the weighing in of Hanham, as was stipulated in the articles.

On the motion of Messrs Campbell and Dobson the action of the committee was approved. The secretary intimated that Mr Summers had reported that Allan would arrive in Timaru on the afternoon of the contest. Mr Wardell suggested that further endeavours be made to have Allan come to Timaru at an earlier date. Mr Angland replied that further overtures had been made to Mr Summers, but he was definitely against allowing Allan to meet the wishes of the Association. Mr Rhodes supported Mr Angland’s

remarks and expressed the opinion that apparently Mr Summers had become more or less established in Oamaru. Judging by the bookings Allan was apparently doing good work in bringing the contest into prominence in Oamaru. It was decided that no further action be taken in the matter. The secretary further intimated that Mr O’Connor had advised that Hanham was now within the weight stipulated and would be in attendance at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

The match committee was directed to be in attendance at Mr Water’s Pharmacy on Thursday.

Mr McGlashan reported on behalf of the House Committee, that all tickets had been distributed and judging by inquiries a good house was assured. The report was adopted.

Mr Rhodes intimated that as a courtesy gesture to the boxers their opinion in regard to control had been sought. Mr Summers had suggested that a sole referee be appointed. Mr O’Connor had no suggestion to make, leaving the matter entirely in the association’s hands. It was decided that the bout be controlled by a referee and two judges. The match committee reported that four special bouts were being arranged. The following officials were appointed.—Referee, professional bout, Mr T. E. Fairhall; judges, Messrs T. Segar and J. Stewart; amateur bouts, referee, Mr T. Segar; judges, Messrs C. H. Barrie, C. C. Campbell; timekeepers, Messrs L. E. Eaton and J. O’Leary; announcer, Mr W. W. Best; competitors stewards, Messrs L. H.
