THE HOUSE
WORK FOR THE WEEK (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 11. The possibility that a Bill embodying the Government’s social security proposals may be introduced in the House of Representatives before presentation of the Budget was mentioned in an interview this evening by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J Savage. Good progress had been made with the drafting of the necessary legislation, the Prime Minister said, whereas the preparation of the Financial Statement and Estimates was likely to be delayed by a hold-up in printing. Mr Savage said he was not in a position to discuss the dates for the appearance of either the Social Security Bill or the Budget, but the Government would do everything in its power to expedite the work of the session. Discussing this week’s program.ae. the Prime Minister said it was anticipated that the Address-in-Reply De bate would be completed either tomorrow or on Wednesday. One day would be spent in discussing the report of the Committee of Inquiry into Maternity Services and the rest cf the week would be given over to the passing of Government Bills which were introduced on Friday. Mr Savage also sti ted that the report of the Select Committee which heard evidence during the recess on the Government’s social security proposals would not be presented in the House until a few ".ays before the introduction of the Bill giving effect to those proposals.
