REPORT OF INQUIRY INTO MATERNITY SERVICES.

Because of the vital importance of providing the best care possible for the welfare of the mothers in maternity cases, the report of the Committee of Inquiry into Maternity Services in New Zealand will no doubt, attract wide attention: “The committee finds that there is ah overwhelming preference for the treatment of maternity cases in hospitals and is satisfied that, as far as New Zealand conditions are concerned, that preference is justified and to be encouraged. After a full survey of existing hospital facilities, the committee is satisfied that, In general, there has been a very real and progressive Improvement in the maternity hospital services of all types, both in accommodation provided and in their efficiency and safety.” It is gratifying to note that the committee was impressed with the very satisfactory maternity services provided by the South Canterbury Hospital Board. On points of policy, the Committee makes minor recommendations, but it is most, refreshing to find the committee in its report making special mention of the fact that an “excellent feature of the South Canterbury Hospital Board’s policy is the provision of small hospitals to serve the needs of outlying districts.” From all points of view the report is most gratifying to South Canterbury and its hospital administration.
