Wai mate branch of the Women’s Divisioi of the Farmers’ Union was held in th* Borough Council Chambers. Th president, Mrs F. G. Mcßae, presidec over a fair attendance. A welcome was given to one nev member. A letter was received Iron Miss Violet McMillan urging member, to support the adult education move ment. The president reported that a clini for the free examination of childrei had been opened in Timaru with Di Mulholland in charge. An educationa picture, "Our Daily Bread,” is expectet to be shown in Waimate at a late: date. A girls’ educational week wil be held in Timaru during August. Mrs Stewart gave an interesting address, “Wheatmeal versus Flour,' and showed some wheatmeal exhibits Recipes were supplied to members. Miss Barnett reported on the executive meeting held in Timaru. Miss ; Barnett 1. Mrs J. Bitchener junr. 2 1 Mrs Meyer 3. FAREWELL SOCIAL FUNCTION AT GLEN AVY A social was tendered in the Glenavy Hall to Mr and Mrs D. McNaughton and family on the occasion of their leaving the district to live in Oamaru Dancing was the chief entertainment for which music was supplied by an orchestra. Mr J. McLean said the friends and well-wishers of Mr and Mrs McNaughton could not let them leave without some expression of their esteem and respect. He then called on Mr D. Y. Gibson to make the presentation. Mr Gibson said he had known Mr McNaughton for many years, and had always found him a good neighbour, with a keen interest in the welfare of the district. Mr McNaughton was associated with the building of the Glenavy Hall, a chairman of the Domain Board, and a member of the School Committee. He was very interested in football, for which his car was always available. In the past when Glenavy boasted an Athletic Club, Mr McNaughton was one of its chief supporters. Mrs McNaughton was also known for her hospitality. With her older daughter, Marion, Mrs

McNaughton was a firm supporter of the Women’s Institute. Mr Gibson then asked Mr r.nd Mrs McNaughton to accept two easy chairs. Mr D. McI Naughton junr. received a fountain pen. Miss Marion a purse bag, and Miss Beatrice a toilet set. In replying. Mr McNaughton said that he thought that his virtues had been over-estimated, but he sincerely appreciated the kindness and generosity of his Glenavy friends. Miss Smart, president of the Women’s Institute, on behalf of the Institute, presented Mrs McNaughton with a crystal jam dish and Miss Marion with a brooch. RIFLE SHOOTING The following were the highest scores registered at the weekly shoot of the Arno Miniature Rifle Club:—G. Hamilton. J. Purdie 80; G. G. Hossack, G. Thomas, R. Hossack 79; R. Allen, S. H. W. McKenzie. E. C. Wright 77; L. Dasler, G. McKenzie 74; E. Wright 73; F. McDonald, D. McDonald 72; J. Sherwin. J. Campbell 71. In the 1 shoot-off for the weekly club button, G. Hamilton was the winner with a further 80. PERSONAL Miss M. Whelan. Waimate, has been appointed to the staff of the Gore High School, and will leave to take up her new position this week. Miss I. Strong, librarian to the Waimate Public Library, Is at present in hospital. Her duties have been taken over by Mi:s Morrison, a member , of the Library Committee.
