BAIL REFUSED

SERIOUS ASSAULT ALLEGED By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, July 11 Charged with assaulting John Joseph Owen on June 7, at Petone, so as to cause him actual bodily harm, Leonard Neiling, aged 25, a labourer and brushmaker, appeared before Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court. Sub-Inspector Dempsey said the accused was arrested at Waihi on the present charge, but the man assaulted had since died. The police asked for a remand for a week. When bail was asked for, SubInspector Dempsey stated that the full charge had not yet been preferred. The remand was granted, but bail was refused.
