RACING AND TROTTING

On and Off the Track A BUDGET OF NEWS AND VIEWS FIXTURES Racing: July 9—Wellington R.C. July 9 Westport J.C. (at Riccarton) July 16—Hawke's Bay Hunt Club. July 16—Waimate Hunt Club. July 23—Rangitikei Hunt Club. July 23—South Canterbury Hunt Club July 23—Matamata R.C. July 28, 30—Poverty Bay Turf Club. July 30—Christchurch Hunt Club. July 30—Taranaki J.C. Entries for the South Canterbury Hunt meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Monday. Acceptances for the Waimate Hunt meeting are due by 8 o’clock on Tuesday. Most of the Riccarton jockeys who have been at Trentham this week have returned to ride at the Westport meeting to-day. Although Studley Royal has run some disappointing races this season he has shown useful form in his essays at Riccarton, and may run well in the Westport Handicap to-day. Nukumai won the Winter Hurdles at Trentham three times. One of his victories was prefaced by success in the Whyte and Parliamentary Handicaps, and the other by a second in the Wellington Steeplechase. At his last start, Great Legion ran away from a big field of two-year-olds at Woodville, and as he is reported to have improved he will carry a lot of Manawatu money if he runs in the Novice Stakes at Trentham. Santoft showed no sign of unsoundness after the Wellington Steeplechase, and his absence from the weights for the July Steeplechase was due to the fact that it was considered inadvisable to ask him for another effort in such going before he was ready. Erination, winner of the Wellington Steeplechase on Tuesday, was one of three horses to make the trip down from Rotorua by float. The long journey evidently did not affect him, otherwise than to make him refuse to school after arrival. Density and Merry march have the best form of those engaged in the , Maiden Stakes at the Westport meet- 1 ing. Crack o’ Dawn has shown great I speed on the training tracks, but the ! Pink Coat filly and the Nightmarch | gelding will probably carry most money. Silver Ring finished chains behind I Mungatoon and Last Refrain in dead i going on the second day of the South I Canterbury meeting, and he will have to improve very greatly to have any chance of beating them to-day at Riccarton. He will meet Mungatoon on only 41bs better terms. Mr N. I. Price, of Emerald Hill, Leppington, reports that the stallion King Lucre died last week, at the ripe age of 34. He was by Goldbar (son of Metal) from the Invader mare Lemonade. and distinguished himself in hurdle races and steeplechases. He won 10, was second in nine, and third in four. Prior to Matoru’s success at Marton on Saturday, he had been racing all through the season without winning, yet in the previous term he had been very consistent, being only twice unplaced in 11 starts. With his win at Trentham, Matoru has proved a bargain at the 250gns he cost Messrs * Fletcher and George. Saccone has 7.6 in the Melbourne Cup. For a maiden performer who has raced unsuccessfully for two seasons to receive 131 b over the minimum, leaves no doubt that the Victorian handicapper is not prepared to take chances with New Zealand horses. Saccone is owned by a Fiji sportsman, and is to go to Australia, but he is not likely to run ir the Melbourne Cup. It was only over the last two furlongs that Santoft failed in the Wellington Steeplechase, and it is generally agreed that lack of racing condition was the main obstacle to a second success. In the circumstances it was a fine performance, and if he can be given another race or two the Acre gelding will be one of the popular candidates for the Grand National. As was predicted. Flashlight was given only one race at Trentham. There is no more certain way of knocking out a promising jumper than giving it three races in winter going at Trentham or Wingatui, and the South Canterbury and Christchurch Hunt fixtures offer opportunities of preparing Flashlight for whatever engagements are made for him at the Grand National fixture. The Parliamentary Handicap winner Quadroon will probably be a New Zealand Cup candidate. Four years old he is by Nigger Minstrel (brother to Desert Gold) from Liasion (Lord-Quex-Lovematch). Lovematch, by Martian from Lovelorn, was a sister to Nones, Menelaus (N.Z. Cup), and Left (dam of Peter Jackson, Caine Carrington and Wotan), so that Quadroon should stay better than th. average. Reports of the Trotting Conference have made it appear that a gift of £5OO was made by it to Mr F. W. Kitchingham, of Greymouth. The correct position is that the presidem announced that clubs throughout New Zealand had contributed £350 toward a testimonial to Mr F. W. Kitchingham, one of the oldest stalwarts in the light harness sport. The conference appreciated this gesture and was pleased to increase the amount to £5OO. The first Dominion conference of delegates from Racing Owners, Breeders and Trainers’ Association considered a resolution asking for amendments to the Gaming Act, on the following points:—Double totalisator, publication of dividends, and the provision of some

means of directing off-the-course bet ting through the legal channel, th totalisator. The proposals were adopt , ed unanimously. This disposes of sug 3 gestions that a majority of owners ar 1 in favour of the licensing of book I makers in preference to a doubl I machine and totalisator. | 1 Trot Divided | The Westport Jockey Club has de I cided to add £3O to the stake for th ! Buller Handicap Trot and to run th i race in divisions. The following i the draw:— First Division—Audo Girl. Boreal i. Drumcree. Gaynor. Lady Marigolc Loneworthy. Mackscot, Mary Direct Palomar. Quest. Resistance. Rosalin I Maid, Shuffle. Stamboul, Sure Potk j Tinker, Ulster Girl. Willa. Temeraire. Second Division—Balaclava, Cole ridge, Garment, Lone Ranger. Sent! / I ment. Loyalette. Marfax, Pamelus, Sil i . ver Grattan. Rerekohau. Revision I Royal Thread, Silk King. Straight Super Jack, True Glow, Wainoni Girl - 1 Taiki. Since the establishment of the Tren tham Hurdles (first day) and Winte » Hurdles (third day) sequence, th< 1 Trentham Hurdles form has usualb ■ given a valuable clue to the Winte: Hurdles result. When Nukamai woi I in 1928, the Trentham winner. Wharn- ■ I cliffe was second. In 1928 Beau Cava 1 i Her. who lost his rider in the Steeples | was the winner, with the Trenthan Hurdles winner Gaze third. Overhau ■ won both races in 1929. Mister Gamy being second on each occasion: anc 1 Paddon (1932). Rasouli (1934). Revisior 1 | (1935). and John Charles (last year) | have been other horses to win both I events. Until Rasouli won, no penalty was carried by the Trentham winner I but Revision was raised 71b, Black Marlin 61b. and John Charles 61b. Full o j Scotch’s penalty is 101 b. so that he is I not so leniently treated. I The Westport Club’s meeting will be | held to-day at Riccarton. in place of one abandoned on the Club’s own course. Horses likely to race well are: Highweight Handicap— Supreme Court, Gillie, Mount Vai. Maiden Stakes—Density, Crack o’ Dawn. Merrymarch. I Buller Trot—lst Division: Quest, 'Stamboul. Lady Marigold: Second | Division—Straight. Rerekohau. SentiI ment. ■ Scanlon Hack—Glenacre, Meroha. Moonraker. I Westport Handicap-- Mungatoon. I Studley Royal, Last Refrain. Granity Trot—Oasis, Lady Slipper. Chaise. Flying Hack—Garonne. Rose of Tralee, Night Dress. Morley Handicap—Grey Honour. Land Raid. Royal Gallant. The Wellington winter meeting is to be concluded to-day. The going will once more be heavy, and form of the two previous days should be a good I guide. The following may be in demand.— Talavera Hurdles—Chaste. Valarth, King Mestor. Novice Handicap—Great Legion. Sly Fox, Yours Truly. July Steeplechase—Bryce Street, All Irish, Clarion Call. Crafton Handicap—Jan Ridd, Gold Glare, Advance Plane. Winter Hurdles—Full o’ Scotch. Court Yard. Erination. Winter Oats—Enge, Lady Montana, Catalogue. Onslow Handicap— Gaily, Rebel Mate, Prince Acre.
