CULVERTS AGAIN
Council Revives Old Controversy Request From Mr Barnes Not so very long ago. the Mackenzie County Council an application for a culvert made by Mr T. D. Burnett. M.P.. and some controversy followed as to the merits of the request. Yesterday, the matter was re-opened at the meeting of the Council when a request came forward from the manager of the property owned by Mr David Barnes, M.P.. at Cricklewood. for a culvert at the gateway to the homestead. The engineer-clerk (Mr D. Jeune) was instructed to reopen negotiations with Mr Burnett, and to investigate both applications to see if suitable arrangements could be made. Several members seemed to think that pipes should be supplied to Mr Barnes, provided he look the responsibility for installing them. Mr P. Kidd: Here we are reversing a previous decision by giving pipes to Mr Barnes. Mr George Murray: Seeing that we arc going to give one member of Parliament pipes, should we not give them to the other? Mr W. Scott said he had inspected the place on Prohibition Road. Cave. •'• here Mr Burnett had desired a culvert. Because of a water table in connection with the road, a lot of .vater drained into the gateway, and none drained away. He thought the Coun- ■ ?il should take some steps to obviate that position. "If that property were mine, and I had been treated in the same way as Mr Burnett has. I would have felt that I had been grossly insulted.’’ he added. The discussion, however, was getting away from the point. Mr C. V. Kirke: This thing might lead to numerous requests, and we should sell the pipes. Mr Scott remarked that there had I been requests for access over county races in Fairlie. and in that case the I mus of providing it seemed to be on I Tie Council. Mr Kidd said Mr Burnett’s gateway vp.s a similar case, because the Counni’s water table drained water into his I Safeway.
