OBITUARY

I MR ROBERT MORGAN The death occurred at his residence, i Dee Street, early this morning of Mr ' Robert Morgan, in his 96th year. ' Mr Morgan arrived in Timaru in i March 1860, being then 17 years of age, ; and he has resided in the town ever since. For many years he was a prominent member of the business community, being associated in a butchery business in Stafford Street for 36 years. 15 as an employee and 21 as proprietor. He retired from busi- [ ness in 1906 and took a trip to England, the six months he was away constituting the longest period he was absent from the town during his long residence. Mr Morgan, was the oldest ratepayer ,in Timaru, having owned the property where he resided since 1864. He was also the oldest bowler in the district, and participated in the game : until two years ago. Some days ago, Mr Morgan had lhe misfortune to fall and fracture a leg, but up till then he had enjoyed good health, and retained his faculties to a surprising degree. While he did not take an active part in public affairs, Mr Morgan was keenly interested in all matters affecting the welfare of the i town, and was able to discuss public matters in a most intelligent way, even ' though he had reached such a fine j age. He was also a staunch member i of St. Mary’s Church.
