False Pretences ’ Ernest Walter Healey, of Christ- j church, was charged that at Westport j on January 7 he obtained £33 from i Thomas Henry Perkins, of Queen : ’ Street. Westport, by falsely represent- j ’ ing that a Clyno car. which he had | bought on hire purchase from Rhodes j Motors. Ltd., Christchurch, was his j ’ property. On the application of Detective- i Sergeant E. Thomas, ? remand until I June 23 was granted. Bail was allowed in self £lOO and two i sureties of £5O or one of £lOO. accused to report daily to the police. Signals Ignored Edwin Charles Moore, charged with driving a motor van across the Strathallan Street railway crossing when the line was not clear, pleaded guilty. Defendant said that he did not see i the crossing-keeper's signal until he j was half-way over the crossing. Sergeant D. Black said that the van ! cleared the engine by a few yards only. ! Defendant said that the keeper was on the opposite side of the hut and he did not see him. The crossing-keeper 'Richard Gribben) said that he was near the middle of the road when defendant drove across. Defendant denied this, and said that he told the stationmaster, at the time that the 'keeper was near his hut. Defendant was fined £2 and costs 10/-. Jimmy Kwong did not appear to answer a similar .charge, and was also fined £2 and costs 10/-. Car Parked on Bus Stand Herbert Bennett did not appear to answer a charge of parking a car on an area set aside as a ’bus stand. Defendant was fined 15/- and costs 12/-. Similarly charged, William Mann and Frederick Muir Ward, were fined 15/and costs 10/-. No Light Bernard Cox was charged with riding a bicycle at light without a light. A fine of 7/6 and costs 10/- was imposed. Drove Without License John Douglas Connell, for operating a motor vehicle without having I obtained a heavy traffic license, was » fined £3 and costs 11/-. Herbert Alfred Bolton pleaded guilty to a similar charge. Defendant said that he had taken out a license after the offence was committed and had been given to understand that if he did so. no action would be taken. He was up against it, having been burnt out last week. A fine of £2 and 12/- costs was imposed. Noisy Afo'or Cycle Gordon Martin Pettigrew was fined £2 and costs 10/- for operating a motor cycle which had no silencer on the exhaust. The Magistrate said that motor cycles without efficient silercers were the cause of a great deal of annoyance to people. Scaffolding Act Three charges of breaches of the Scaffolding Act were brought by the Inspector of Scaffolding, Christchurch (Mr N. H. Graham), against George Starsmere. builder, of Timaru. Defendant was fined £2/10 - and costs on each charge and witness' expenses £2/3/8. Maintenance Case Dudley Philp, for ore ch of a maintenance order was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour, defendant to be released on payment of the arrears, amounting to £24/14/6.
